Tahery Cave & Beyond

Tahery Cave is part of a 18 km caving network located in the Eastern Hajar mountain range. When the Indian sub-continent collided with the Southern side of Arabia while it was drifting toward Asia, the Eastern Hajjar mountains were uplifted at rapid speed from under the sea to nearly 5000 feet above sea level. During this uplift, and through erosion of the rocks, one of the region’s largest caving system was formed creating multiple passages and channels inside the Salmah mountain. 

This caving network now is a world of its own, full of geological treasures, an amazing eco system and the home to the many wonders of Oman. The Tahery and Crystal Chamber trip give you a taste of this amazing geological wonder! This 2 night camping trip offers one night camping on the Salmah Plateau and another in the cave itself!

Packing List
The Essentials: Ankle support hiking boots, thick woolen socks, 50L hiking rucksack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, headlights (with spare batteries), thick trousers as the rocks are very sharp and can rip leggings etc, a spare set of clean clothing, reusable insulated water bottle (2l), Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Nice to Have: Hat, sunglasses, gloves for summertime (Rocks can get hot), lip balm, bug spray/ repellent, camera / gopro with chargers, extra batteries, toiletries, fresh clothes, sandals / flipflops for the camp and hiking poll is optional

Location

Day 1

1 PM – Meet at Husaak Center Muscat. 

3:30 PM - After a team brief the group will set off towards the Eastern Hajar Mountains, the drive will take 2.5 to 3 hours. 

5:30/6 PM - Upon arrival the team will set up camp. Depending on the time, the group might get to enjoy a light hike around sunset 

7:30 PM - Camp fire and a delicious dinner.  Camp 1 is next to the vehicles, and you will have the option to sleep in tents or on outdoor cot beds. 
 

Day 2 

5 AM to 6 AM - Wake up around sunrise, enjoy a warm breakfast and pack up camp. There is little to no shade on the hike, so the aim is to reach the Cave by 9am before the sun gets too hot!  

The hike is 5 km, but it is relatively flat. The rocks are a bit lose in some sections and require some focus but other than that it is consider an easy level hike. The last section is medium level with some scrambling over larger rocks prior to reaching the cave entrance. The hike will take about 2-3 hours. Once you are in the cave, the group will stop and eat lunch. Once rested the group will  putting on their caving gear and head inside the cave. This trip will take 3-5 hours dependent on the size of the group to the Crystal Chamber and back.  After we are back, we will chill at the cave entrance and have dinner along with campfire stories! 

Day 3

5 AM to 6 AM - Wake up around sunrise, enjoy a warm breakfast and pack up camp.  The group will hike 5km to reach the vehicles. The hike will take around 3 hours.

9 AM – Refreshment stop

12 Noon to 2 PM – Arrive back at Husaak Center Muscat
