Bosco Gurin - Between legend and reality

Fairy tales and village stories have played multiple roles in communities of Ticino. They preserved collective memory, and served as educational tools, teaching moral and social concepts to children. Tales have a ritual and magical dimension too.  

During this tour we will discover with a guide the village of Bosco Gurin, a place where “Weltu” creatures are said to be living. With its 1,504 m.s.m. it is the highest commune and is the only German-speaking village in Ticino.      

On the way to Bosco Gurin, other legends and stories will be narrated. Stories of good and evil creatures, of witches, places of magic.  

A pic-nic lunch is provided by the association “Val Magia” (Valley of Magic) a group of women who select personally local products.

First Stop: Avegno  

Witch hunts have sadly scarred the history of Ticino’s valleys. Plinio Martini, one of Ticino's most renowned writers, delves into profound themes like the plight of women, poverty, and the role of religion in our rural society. In Avegno, we will explore together this poignant chapter of our past. 

Second Stop: Cevio 

Ticino was ruled by the Landfogti for centuries. Seated in the idyllic garden of the Valle Maggia Museum, we will recount the captivating legend of the Prison Cell Door at the Landfogti House. This story, steeped in history and mystery, will transport you to a time when justice and power were wielded with an iron hand, and every door had a tale to tell. 

Third Stop: Cerentino  

In a quaint corner of Cerentino, nestled above Cevio, a fairytale woodhouse stands over a river. This enchanting spot once produced paper for artists. A brief visit reveals that magic still lingers here, offering inspiration for art and harmony to those who seek it.  

Fourth Stop: Bosco Gurin 

Bosco Gurin is the highest mountain village in Ticino and one of Switzerland’s most enchanting places. Settled by the Walsers from the Valais in the Middle Ages, this village has preserved its rich tapestry of myths, stories, and customs. The Walsers brought with them a wealth of legends, including the mystical Weltus creatures that continue to captivate imagination today. 

Together with a guide we will visit the ethnological museum of Bosco Gurin which won the Meyvaert 2021 award for its exceptional commitment to social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
