Location
Visit the Ancient site of Akrotiri, also known as the Minoan Pompeii, which was destroyed and covered by Minoan Pompeii, which was damaged and covered by the ashes of an enormous volcanic eruption in 1450 BC. The ancient Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption 3600 years ago was discovered in 1967 nearby the modern village of Akrotiri, remarkably well-preserved. Pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems, and three-story buildings have been found at the site. Many believe the disaster and the site itself as the inspiration behind Plato’s story of Atlantis.
Leaving the Akrotiri excavations. The second important period in the history of Santorini is linked with the city of Ancient Thira. The excavations uncovered the ruins of ancient buildings, sanctuaries and temples, inscriptions and carved stones of the archaic period, and the Ancient theater in an excellent location with a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea.
Then, you will continue to visit the Archeological Museum, which contains collections from the Archaic to the Roman period.
The tour continues to visit the Prehistorical Museum, which takes you back in time and sketches the course of the prehistoric Thira through selected finds from various excavations dating back to the Neolithic, Minoan, and Hellenistic periods.
